Adaptable to a wide variety of growing conditions, plant Sempervivum Green Wheel on rooftops and in rock gardens, or tuck among crevices in stone wall or walkway. The common name hens and chicks derives from the plants growth habit. Tiny new rosettes grow in a ring around the central mother âhen.â These baby âchicksâ can be moved to expand the planting, or remain in place to form interesting mounds. Once mature, mother hens flower and die, leaving room for her chicks to grow. Dead rosettes can be removed after flowering by gently pulling at the base.
